This week we have been working on solving multi-step problems relating to percents, such as discounts, taxes, and interest. With Black Friday coming up, it's an excellent time for the class to create real world problems to solve!
We pulled some ads from newspapers and mailings and the students are working to create their own problems based on the discounts and prices listed in the ads. So far, we've created some pretty complicated problems. The next step - solving them!

As our ratios and proportions unit moves towards application of ratios with percents, I've asked students to be on the lookout for flyers, ads, and coupons for holiday sales. We will use them in class to create real world problems for finding discounts, taxes, and other fees. It should be pretty eye-opening!

Tomorrow we find out if our proportional reasoning was accurate when we measure our newly shrunken Shrinky Dink Tangrams!

Important Update! Our first math assessment of the quarter will be on Ratios and Proportional Relationships and is scheduled for next Friday, October 17, 2014!

Today we completed our Rethink your Drink activity, where we compared the ratio of grams of sugar per 1 oz of drink in a variety of soft drinks! We found the drink with the most sugar per ounce was a Treetop Smoothie Juice Box and Sunny-D had the least amount of sugar. Our full results and pictures coming soon!
We have been discussing proportional relationships and how to represent them on a table or a graph. If students need additional explanations, the website LearnZillion.com has a variety of video lessons on the topic. Here's one that covers our recent learning: https://learnzillion.com/lessons/3171-graph-a-proportional-relationship-using-a-table.

On Friday, September 26, we will be working on a
hands-on math activity, comparing the amounts of sugar in various beverages. I am
asking students to please bring an empty drink container – any drink with sugar
(soda, juice, milk) and any size - will do.
If you have any problems or difficulty getting an
empty drink container, just let me know and I will bring extras. Thank you!

Here's a preview of what we will be studying this year:
September 11, 2014
Our focus today was on attending to precision, using tools strategically, and reasoning. We tested the belief that a person's wingspan equals their height.
Stay tuned for our results!

Today we designed paper columns in small groups and then tested them for strength:

Today we had our first class session! Students created tweets about math, explaining what "math is" to them. I published their ideas at https://twitter.com/MVGiftedClass. This week we will focus on getting to know each other and the 8 mathematical practices:
- I can make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- I can reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- I can conduct arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- I can model with mathematics.
- I can use appropriate tools strategically.
- I can attend to precision.
- I can look for and make use of structure.
- I can look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Throughout the week, we will complete hands-on activities that develop our understanding of what the math practices really mean. On Friday, we will complete the Pre-Assessment for our first unit: Ratios and Proportional Relationships.
Due Friday: Parent Survey & Completed "Math About Me" cover
